Royal Brunei runs two different offers and the internet has fused them into one. Its own stopover page never once says “free” — and its Conditions of Carriage never say “STPC”.

Royal Brunei is the carrier where the gap between what the internet says and what the airline says
is widest. Search for it and you will be told about a complimentary transit hotel with meal vouchers
and round-trip transfers, gated on an eight-hour connection. Read Royal Brunei’s own Stopover in Brunei
page and you will find something quite different: no hotel, no transfers, and no use of the word
“free” at all.
Both things can look true at once because RB runs two unrelated offers and the
internet has fused them into one. Here is what each actually is.
Brunei page contains zero instances of “free” and zero of “transfer”; its only
occurrence of “hotel” is a navigation menu item. Its Conditions of Carriage contain zero
instances of “STPC”, the industry term for a carrier-paid transit hotel. Those documents
were searched end to end, not skimmed.
Offer one: RB Stopover — the right to stop, not a bed
This is the programme that applies to everyone. What it grants is permission and a booking mechanism:
you may break your journey in Brunei rather than connecting straight through, at no change to your fare.
It is a way to see a country you were flying over anyway, and on those terms it is a fair offer.
- Passengers transiting more than 8 hours and not exceeding 24 hours in BWN are
eligible to request it. - Request and reservation must be made at least five working days before the intended
arrival in Brunei. - Limited to one reservation per ticketed booking — either the outbound or the
inbound sector, not both. - Valid only for tickets purchased from 4 March 2025 until 30 September 2026.
- Applicable only on selected city pairs, which RB lists in a table on its own page.
- Visa and other stopover-related costs are the passenger’s own responsibility and
expense. - Not valid for Group, RB Super Saver, or non-revenue bookings — redemptions,
ID/AD rebates, FAM, complimentary, sponsorships, positioning, school passage and staff travel.

own fare table puts booking classes O, A, V and G in RB Super Saver. If your ticket
shows one of those four letters, RB Stopover is not available to you at any layover length.
Offer two: Stay in Empire — the actual free night
The complimentary hotel night is real, and it is emphatically not for everyone. Royal Brunei offers a
one-night stay at The Empire Brunei, a five-star resort, to Business Class passengers. In RB’s own words
you “stay in elegance for free at The Empire Brunei”.
- Valid for new Business Class return tickets purchased from 1 March 2026 to
31 December 2026, travelling from 1 March 2026. - One hotel room night per ticketed booking, on twin-sharing where applicable.
- Applicable on flights from all RB destinations to Brunei except Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and
Hangzhou. - For stopovers, it applies to flights to and from Melbourne, London, Dubai and
Jeddah. - Request at least five working days before arrival; inside that window it becomes
subject to availability. - Cancellations must be told to RB, its agents, or the hotel directly within 48 hours
before the intended arrival. - Excluded: group business class, redemption tickets, RB upgrades, RB Travel Pass, sponsored tickets,
ID/AD rebate, FAM tickets, school passage and staff travel. - Visa and travel-related costs remain the passenger’s own responsibility.
Royal Brunei’s Business Class fare buckets are D for Business Saver and
C, Z and J for full Business, so those are the letters that put you in range.
“Campaign excludes breakfast and hotel transfer however passengers can arrange hotel transfer for
a fee by contacting The Empire Brunei.” So budget for getting there and for eating in the morning
— at a resort roughly half an hour out of the capital, neither is incidental. This is the single
detail most summaries of the offer leave out, and it is the one that costs you money on the day.
What about the involuntary long connection?
There is a third thing people mean by “free transit hotel”, and it is worth separating
out because it is genuinely different: STPC, where the airline houses you because
its own schedule left you with no earlier onward flight. That is not a marketing programme; it
is operational, handled case by case, and most airlines never publish its terms.
Royal Brunei is one of them. The term STPC does not appear in its Conditions of Carriage at all, and
the accommodation language in that document deals with disruption — cancellations, delays and
missed connections caused by the carrier — rather than with scheduled long layovers. So I cannot
tell you what RB grants here, because RB does not say.

question: does my itinerary qualify for carrier-provided transit accommodation? Get the answer
recorded in the booking before you fly. An entitlement that exists only in a phone call is one you will
be arguing about at midnight in BWN.
Two dates to watch
Both offers are written with end dates, and unlike China’s rolling visa windows these are ordinary
commercial deadlines that have been allowed to lapse elsewhere in this series.
- RB Stopover: tickets purchased until 30 September 2026.
- Stay in Empire: tickets purchased until 31 December 2026.
If you are reading this after those dates, confirm the offer still exists before booking around it.
Oman Air’s free stopover night ended on 30 November 2024 and is still being quoted as live by travel
sites today — that is the failure mode these dates exist to prevent.
Is it worth it?
In Business Class, plainly yes: a night at The Empire is a serious hotel and the offer is
unambiguous. In economy, judge it for what it is — a free pass to break a long journey in a
country most people only overfly, with your own bed to pay for. That is worth having on a
Melbourne–London routing. It is not the complimentary hotel the search results promised you.
Frequently asked questions
Does Royal Brunei give you a free hotel on a long layover?
Not on the general programme, despite what summaries claim. Royal Brunei’s Stopover in Brunei page does not contain the word “free” anywhere, does not mention transfers, and does not mention a hotel. What it grants is the right to request a stopover of 8 to 24 hours. The one complimentary hotel night RB does publish is a separate, Business-Class-only offer at The Empire.
How long can the stopover be?
More than 8 hours and not exceeding 24 hours in Bandar Seri Begawan. Outside that window you are not eligible to request RB Stopover at all.
How far ahead do I have to ask?
At least five working days before you are due to arrive in Brunei, for both the stopover request and the Empire offer. For the Empire night, RB adds that a request made inside five working days is subject to availability rather than refused outright.
Which fares are excluded?
RB Stopover is not valid on Group bookings, RB Super Saver fares, or non-revenue tickets — frequent-flyer redemptions, ID/AD rebates, FAM, complimentary, sponsorship, positioning, school passage and staff travel. RB Super Saver is its cheapest bucket, booking classes O, A, V and G.
What do I get in Business Class?
A complimentary one-night stay at the five-star Empire Brunei, limited to one hotel room night per ticketed booking on twin-sharing where applicable, on return Business Class tickets. It applies from all RB destinations to Brunei except Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and Hangzhou, and for stopover flights to and from Melbourne, London, Dubai and Jeddah. Read the small print though: Royal Brunei states the campaign “excludes breakfast and hotel transfer”, and that a transfer can be arranged for a fee direct with The Empire. You are getting the room, not the stay.
Who pays for the visa?
You do. Royal Brunei states that applicable visa or other stopover-related costs are the passenger’s own responsibility and expense.
