Gulf Air’s programme has a name most passengers never hear: STPC, or Stopover Paid by Carrier. It works differently from every other airline in this series. Turkish gates on cabin and hours, Etihad on booking direct, Qatar on connection length. Gulf Air gates on the value of your ticket — and if you fall below the line, it sells you the identical service instead.

Two conditions have to hold at once — the clock and the ticket price.

2. The ticket price — the rule that makes Gulf Air unusual

Gulf Air counts ticket fare plus carrier-imposed charges toward those thresholds. Taxes do not count — the airline is explicit that the base fare excludes tax.
3. The other conditions
- Through fares only. Not applicable if you are holding two separate tickets.
- Both your outbound and inbound flights to Bahrain must be booked on a Gulf Air flight (including Gulf Air codeshares) and operated by Gulf Air.
- Available for each leg of the journey where your connecting flight departs Bahrain, subject to eligibility.
- If you are under 16 and entitled to an STPC, you must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
- Change your ticket and you must tell the World Wide Contact Centre to reschedule the hotel — and note the STPC voucher is non-refundable.
- Passengers holding Hahn Air (HR) tickets get the same entitlement and criteria as Gulf Air ticket holders, regardless of which airline issued it.
If your ticket is under USD 450, you can still buy it
This is the part that makes Gulf Air worth knowing about even when you do not qualify: it sells the same stopover cheaply, and the price depends on how early you ask.

When things go wrong — two rules that favour you
And if Bahrain immigration refuses entry to a passenger who was entitled to an STPC, Gulf Air does not simply leave you: Falcon Gold passengers get the Falcon Gold Lounge plus a meal voucher, and all other passengers get a meal voucher.
What Gulf Air does not promise
The page also makes no promise about airport–hotel transfers, meals or breakfast being included with the STPC, so do not assume them. Separately, Gulf Air sells a Bahrain Stopover package — a paid holiday product of up to four nights with tours and transport, which is a different thing from STPC and is only available to travellers eligible for a Bahrain visa on arrival.
Frequently asked questions
Does Gulf Air give a free hotel for a long layover in Bahrain?
Yes, if two things are true. Your transit must be more than 7 hours and less than 24 in Economy, or more than 6 and less than 24 in Falcon Gold; and your ticket must be worth at least USD 450 in fare plus carrier-imposed charges, or USD 850 if you want a stopover in both directions. Below that value Gulf Air sells the stopover rather than giving it.
How much does Gulf Air charge if I do not qualify?
USD 90 per adult and USD 65 per child aged 2–12 if you book through the World Wide Contact Centre before leaving your origin. If you leave it to within 24 hours of departure, the airport, or arrival in Bahrain, it is USD 110 for both adults and children, arranged at the Bahrain Airport Office in the Arrivals Terminal. Infants under 2 are complimentary.
Why was I refused an STPC on a long layover?
Most likely because a shorter connection existed. Gulf Air withdraws the entitlement entirely if a connecting flight was available within 7 hours for Economy or 6 hours for Falcon Gold, and says passengers choosing the longer option must buy a stopover themselves. Two separate tickets rather than a through fare will also disqualify you.
Does the Gulf Air stopover include a free Bahrain visa?
Gulf Air’s own transit page does not say so. Its only reference to visas directs passengers to the government portal to check requirements. Treat entry permission as your responsibility and confirm it before you rely on the hotel, which is outside the airport.
What if my Gulf Air connection is cancelled or badly delayed?
Then the ticket-value rule stops mattering. Gulf Air states that if your connection is cancelled or delayed beyond 7 hours, all customers are entitled to a complimentary Stopover Paid by Carrier irrespective of booking class.
Can I change my flight after the STPC is booked?
You can, but you must notify Gulf Air’s World Wide Contact Centre to reschedule the hotel booking, and the STPC voucher itself is non-refundable.
