RwandAir is the carrier nobody writes about. It appears on none of the free-hotel round-ups this
series has checked, and I only found it by crawling airline sites for a stopover page rather than
trusting a list. What turned up is one of the more straightforward offers anywhere: eight hours in Kigali
and RwandAir puts you in a hotel, at no cost, on an itinerary you were flying anyway.

on us.” There is no fare threshold, no cabin gate and no loyalty tier anywhere in the terms.
The rule that makes this different from every other carrier here
Read the booking instruction carefully, because it contains something no other guide in this series can
say:
“Purchase your RwandAir ticket to a destination beyond Kigali, then request your stopover
by either emailing stopover@rwandair.com before your trip
or upon arrival in Kigali.”
Nearly every carrier in this series refuses same-day requests. Air China states flatly that
“on-site bookings are not accepted”. Sichuan Airlines closes bookings four hours before your
onward flight. Royal Brunei wants five working days. Vietnam Airlines wants eight days if you need a
transit visa. RwandAir will take the request when you land.

Who qualifies
- Any passenger on a RwandAir ticket through Kigali International Airport, on an
international itinerary, with a transit of 8 to 24 hours, whose final destination is
beyond Kigali. - RwandAir-operated flights only. The programme is available exclusively to passengers
connecting on RwandAir metal. - Not if Kigali is your origin or destination. RwandAir is explicit: travelling to or
from Kigali as your destination puts you outside the offer. - Already booked? You still qualify. RwandAir states that if your existing itinerary
already includes a qualifying transit through Kigali, you are eligible — so this is worth claiming
retrospectively on a ticket you bought months ago.
What is actually included — and what is not
This is where to read carefully, because the gap between the two lists is where people get caught out
in the taxi queue.

RwandAir’s wording is that “breakfast and airport transfers depend on the participating hotel and
will be confirmed at the time of booking”. So budget for a taxi from KGL and a coffee in the
morning, and treat either as a bonus if your hotel includes them. Get the answer in writing when they
confirm your stay, rather than discovering it at reception at one in the morning.
How it compares
Judged against the rest of this series, RwandAir sits in an unusual place: a modest offer with almost
no conditions attached.
- No fare threshold. Emirates wants USD 450, Gulf Air USD 450, SriLankan USD 375.
RwandAir asks for nothing. - No cabin gate. China Southern’s non-intercontinental rule effectively requires
business class. Royal Brunei’s free night is Business only. RwandAir does not mention cabin at all. - No shorter-connection trap. Emirates and Turkish both void the benefit if a shorter
connection existed. RwandAir’s terms contain no such rule — which means a deliberately long Kigali
layover is not automatically disqualifying, the thing that kills most of these claims elsewhere. - But no meals or transfers promised, where Emirates includes all meals and a visa, and
Vietnam Airlines includes a tour and the visa fee.
Is it worth it?
If you are routing through Kigali — and RwandAir’s network makes it a plausible connection
between Europe and much of eastern and southern Africa — then yes, unreservedly. A free night with
no fare gate, no cabin gate and no shortest-connection rule is a better deal than most of the Gulf
carriers offer, and Kigali is an easy, safe city to spend an evening in.
What it is not is a package. You are getting a bed and the taxes on it. Plan the rest yourself.

Is the RwandAir Kigali stopover really free?
Yes, for the room. RwandAir’s words: “If you are flying through Kigali on RwandAir and your connection is 8 hours or more, we will put you up for the night in a partner hotel in Kigali at no cost to you.” The offer covers one complimentary hotel night, hotel taxes and standard amenities. Breakfast and airport transfers are not guaranteed — they depend on the participating hotel and are confirmed when your stay is booked.
How long does my layover need to be?
RwandAir describes it both as “layovers exceeding eight hours” and as “a transit of 8 to 24 hours”. So eight hours is the floor and twenty-four the ceiling.
Can I ask for it at the airport?
Yes — and this is what sets RwandAir apart. You request the stopover “by either emailing stopover@rwandair.com before your trip or upon arrival in Kigali”. Nearly every other carrier in this series requires days of notice and refuses on-site requests; Air China says so explicitly. Ask in advance anyway, because it is subject to availability.
Does it work if Kigali is where I am going?
No. RwandAir states that “if you are travelling to or from Kigali as your destination, this offer does not apply”. Your final destination has to be beyond Kigali, on an international itinerary.
Does it have to be a RwandAir flight?
Yes. The programme is available “exclusively to passengers connecting through Kigali International Airport (KGL) on RwandAir-operated flights”. A codeshare flown by somebody else will not qualify.
What about children?
RwandAir states that children travelling with an eligible adult may be accommodated in line with hotel occupancy policies — so the room, not the airline, sets the limit.
