Round-up lists keep saying Hainan Airlines gives you a free hotel across its Chinese hubs. Against Hainan’s own pages that is only true in one city. Haikou gives a genuinely free room. Beijing gives discount coupons. Knowing which is which before you plan an overnight is the whole point of this page.

Hainan Airlines runs transfer benefits at four international hub cities: Beijing, Haikou, Shenzhen and Chongqing. What you get is not the same in each, and Hainan’s own overview carries a caveat most summaries drop — international transfer benefits “will soon be available in Beijing and Shenzhen”, with terms varying by location. So treat this as a Haikou programme with a Beijing discount attached, and check locally for the other two.

Haikou: the one that is actually free
Haikou Meilan International Airport provides transfer accommodation and dining to eligible Hainan Airlines passengers. This is the real thing — a free room, not a coupon.

The qualifying test is refreshingly light: you show your ID and an onward flight scheduled within 72 hours. There is no ticket-number rule, no booking-class exclusion list and no elite-status requirement published for this benefit — which makes it far easier to hit than most airline stopover programmes.

The room, precisely
The free accommodation is one standard room for two people, for one night. If you are travelling alone and want the room to yourself, there is an additional RMB 200 charge — so a solo traveller should expect either to share or to pay. Check-out follows a clock rule worth reading twice:
- Check in before 06:00 → check out by 12:00 the same day.
- Check in after 06:00 → check out by 12:00 the following day.
That first line is the trap. Land on a red-eye at 04:00, take the room, and you are out by noon that day — roughly eight hours, not a full night. Land at 07:00 and you keep the room until noon tomorrow. Same benefit, wildly different value, decided by three hours of arrival time.
How to claim it
The route runs through a third party, and Hainan says so plainly — the external platform’s content, services and policies are independent of the airline.
- On the booking confirmation page in the Hainan Airlines app, tap “Book Haikou transfer benefits”.
- You are redirected to the Haikou Meilan Airport mini-programme. Register an account, choose “Apply for Transit Benefits”, then photograph and upload the required documents. Once the review is approved you receive a QR code for the corresponding voucher.
- On arrival at Haikou Meilan, go to the Haikou Meilan International Airport Hotel, present the QR code for verification, and collect the voucher.
The walk-up desk — a real difference from Air China
Unlike Air China, which refuses on-site bookings outright, Hainan publishes a counter for in-person applications: the Information Desks in Terminals 1 and 2 at Haikou Meilan International Airport. Combined with the note above about overseas bookings being completed offline, that makes Haikou a programme you can realistically claim on arrival — subject, as always, to rooms remaining.

Beijing: a discount, not a free room
This is where the round-up lists mislead. In Beijing, Hainan partners with H Rewards to offer transfer accommodation discount services at selected H Rewards hotels. There is no complimentary night. The eligible connections are the same three shapes as Haikou, and the qualifying test is lighter still — you present your telephone number.

“New customer” has a specific meaning here: someone who has not booked a calendar room through H Rewards’ own channels (the H Rewards app or WeChat mini-programme) in the 365 days before claiming, and who has completed a stay. Coupons are limited to one per room per night, cannot be combined with each other or with other hotel promotions, and cannot be used for hourly-rate rooms, catering or sundries. Availability is capped per hotel per day.

Hainan’s rules are looser and its window far longer, but the free room lives on a holiday island most European itineraries do not touch. The visa gate
The hotel is outside the terminal, so you have to legally enter China. For most readers that is easy in 2026: China’s unilateral visa-free entry, extended to 31 December 2026, covers all 27 EU states plus the UK, Switzerland, Norway, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and others, for up to 30 days. That date is worth reading as a published date rather than a deadline: China has extended this window each year rather than letting it lapse, and pages often still show the previous cutoff simply because nobody re-published them. It is the government’s call rather than the airline’s, so check the current position before you book — but do not assume a date a few months out means the scheme is ending.
If your nationality is not on that list, the route in is the 240-hour visa-free transit, open to 55 nationalities across 65 ports in 24 provinces, and requiring a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region — not back where you came from. Hainan province operates its own visa-free entry arrangements as well, which are worth checking separately if Haikou is your destination rather than your connection.
