Qatar Airways Doha Stopover Hotel: The Free One, the USD 14 One, and the September Deadline

Qatar Airways is unusual in running a complimentary transit hotel and a paid stopover programme so cheap it barely counts as paid. Most write-ups pick one and call it “the Qatar stopover”. They are separate products with separate rules, and the one you want depends on how long you are in Doha and whether the layover was your idea.

1. Transit accommodation — the complimentary one

Qatar’s own wording on its transit accommodation page: “you can request transit accommodation if you will be in Doha for 8 to 24 hours, with no immediate connections.” It adds two conditions in the same breath — “fees may apply depending on your route”, and passport details must be provided to check in to a hotel.

The rule that expires on 15 September 2026

Qatar’s STPC policy — Stopover For the Purpose of Connection — is more generous than the public page suggests, and it carries an end date. Its wording:

“Customers holding FIT, group or redemption tickets and transiting through DOH up to 15 September 2026 with a connection time of 8–24 hours are eligible for Stopover for the Purpose of Connection (STPC), regardless of immediate connection, RBD or fare value.”

Two more points from the policy worth knowing: if your travel is more than 72 hours away the request goes in ahead of time, and for tickets sold within 72 hours of departure hotel pre-booking may not be possible — in that case accommodation is arranged on arrival at Doha instead. Passengers whose journey begins or ends in Doha are outside the scope of STPC entirely; it is a transit benefit.

2. Stopover packages — USD 14 is not a typo

If your Doha transit is between 12 and 96 hours, Qatar sells hotel packages through Qatar Airways Holidays at prices that undercut almost anything you could book yourself. These are Qatar’s own published starting fees, per person:

Two nights in a four-star Hilton or Marriott property for USD 23 per person is the headline, and it is why a Doha connection is worth deliberately lengthening rather than minimising. The Luxury tier includes breakfast; the Premium beach tier adds Doha Sands Beach access with a sunbed, towel and water.

The booking rule that trips people up

The rest of the eligibility, in Qatar’s words:

• Valid for Qatar Airways and code-share confirmed ticket holders with a minimum transit of 12 hours in Doha.
• Maximum two bookings per ticket — one outbound, one return, each needing a confirmed qualifying flight.
• Not all flight bookings are eligible, and all bookings are subject to availability.
• Hotel check-in date must match the qualifying arrival date in Doha.
• Maximum room occupancy two adults and one child under 11 using existing bedding.
• Passengers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
• Present a valid boarding pass and the booking confirmation at check-in; the name must match, and bookings are non-transferable.

The visa question — and why it is easier here than at most hubs

Qatar states that more than 100 nationalities can enter Qatar without a visa, which is the single biggest practical difference between a Doha stopover and several of its Gulf and Asian rivals. It still adds that a valid visa may be required depending on your passport, and points to the Visit Qatar website for visa-free eligibility.

This matters because both programmes put you in a city hotel, not a transit facility. If you cannot clear immigration, neither the free room nor the USD 14 room is any use to you.

Which should you actually use?

• Layover 8–12 hours: transit accommodation is your only route — packages need 12 hours minimum.
• Layover 12–24 hours: both are open. Transit accommodation may be complimentary but Qatar warns fees can apply by route; a Standard package is a known USD 14. If you want certainty, buy the package.
• Layover over 24 hours: transit accommodation no longer applies. Packages run to 96 hours, so this is package territory and the point at which Doha becomes a short holiday rather than a long wait.
